Have you tried a Ubuntu install using the Server edition of Ubuntu or using the alternative installer? With the server install media you can get picky about what gets installed by default and only install the bare minimum. <br>
<br>There are options besides GNOME, KDE, and XFCE environments when you're looking for a lighter weight GUI experience. There is no shortage of window managers out there. GNUStep, OpenStep, AfterStep, Blackbox, fvwm, IceWM, Sawfish, Window Maker. Or you can go with the command line. ;)<br>
