Paul,  

To set the system clock to the hardware clock  

hwclock --hctosys  

Other way around:  

hwclock --systohc  

You should be able to check the hardware clock by issuing:  

hwclock  

That will give you an idea of how far off the hardware clock is.  If it is
skewed far enough, you will probably want to go in to the bios on a reboot
and update it.  If it does not stick past power outages, you might want to
replace the cmos battery on the motherboard.
