I hadn't thought of that.  

I did modify the line in modules.pcimap, and it loads the ndiswrapper
instead of the prism54 module.  So I'm happy.  I don't really have a
better understanding of how all these programs interact to load the
kernel modules, but it works, so I can live with it.
