Make sure that wineserver is stopped before starting X again. There is an option in the winesetup that allows for Xvidmod and XRandR which allows wine to resize your screen. This has never worked correctly for me, so I have those options turned off. I'm running wine in a 800x600 desktop window to get around this problem. Did you run wine under the root account? I would also have you check lsmod to make sure that you have all the drivers necessary for X to work correctly. I had problems recently when I upgraded to a 2.6 kernel. I needed to look at the agp modules, the drm modules, and framebuffer modules. Each category had new modules that needed to be loaded before X would work.
