I just had this same problem. 

I think virtual_alias_maps needs to be virtual_maps in debian 3.0
stable.  That fixed it for me, I was doing it from various docs I found,
and they all used virtual_alias_maps, but checking the output from
postconf -n did not list anything about the virtual_alias_maps, or
virtual_maps.  If it does not show up there, then postfix did not pick
up that configuration.

I would try looking at that output, and changing the above variable
name.
