I don't want to trash talk, but I would recommend against a self-study* program such as those offered by TechSkills (where I have attended) and New Horizons (which I've not attended but I understand is the same type of program). While I was able to get various certifications through the program at TechSkills, I was not impressed with their 'mentors' that are on-site, nor with the learning material. The mentors (definitely not teachers) were not knowledgeable about any of the courses I was taking (!) and the learning material (actual, published books) were filled with errors that, as a programming novice, I could easily spot for the first few chapters but not after that. (The whole programming aspect, to me, was a joke that wasted 7 months of my time without any progress on my behalf.) I am still paying off this Sallie Mae loan from 5 years ago. The Linux certification that I received (Linux+ from CompTIA) and the other certs have definitely helped me to gain employment and have helped with that employment, but I have learned much more about Linux with a few months of just playing around, and a whole ton more on the job as well. I have heard great things about using Slackware for learning about GNU/Linux systems and even better things about learning from the Linux From Scratch (LFS) book, but in practice we (at my office) use Debian GNU/Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (CentOS also) for pretty much everything that we do. Read howtoforge.com and practice; use virtual machines a lot; break things; install (for learning only) Webmin to see how it changes files for different uses (but never use Webmin on a machine with actual customer data ? it's very insecure); read forums and lurk in IRC channels... Having said all of that, if anyone does know some good GNU/Linux or MySQL courses in the TC area, I too may be interested! ;) Jeffrey ?l ]?f? *self-study may work for you but there was too much here that wasn't working for me, beyond this one aspect of it all. I got a two year degree about 10 years ago at Hennepin Tech, there were a couple of Linux courses as part of the program. The learning was very practically based and the cost was reasonable. The Dislocated Worker's Program will pay tuition in some cases. I didn't find anything local I'd consider, but haven't looked in several years. On the other hand, nobody has better tech ref materials than O'Reilly. http://www.oreillyschool.com/ Chuck -----Original Message----- From: tclug-jobs-bounces at mn-linux.org [mailto:tclug-jobs-bounces at mn-linux.org]On Behalf Of linda scott Sent: Sunday, January 17, 2010 10:05 AM To: tclug-jobs at mn-linux.org Subject: [tclug-jobs] Linux Onsite Training Help I am looking for recommendations on Linux Certification facilities (onsite) in the Twin Cities area.
