This information will be useful to companies that are considering generating positions for entry level admins but are uncertain what kind of advantages and disadvantages are involved. Is there anyone here on the list who can offer any insight to the following questions: 1) Have you found hiring entry level *nix employees advantageous? 2) What kind of positions do you generally hire them into? 3) Does the fact that they are being trained in your specific environment for the first time help ensure that they do not have to 'unlearn' wrong things that were taught at other companies? Any other insight you have for employers considering generating entry level Linux/Unix people would be helpful. Have you read the Hacker FAQ? ("So you have yourself a hacker") Good reading. http://www.swcp.com/~pcaskey/hacker-faq.html You could probably glean some ideas for content off this. Message-ID: <20010125100414.A11910@sherohman.org> I'm currently working a montly-NT/some-linux programming job and have been watching (mostly passively) for pure-*nix jobs for a while now, in hopes of getting out of Windows entirely. Now, though, the company has gone into a tailspin for lack of funding and even the owner seems less-than-optimisitic about the chances for recovery. It's definitely time to go elsewhere. Ideally, I'd like to find something that's a mix of development and sysadminnish stuff, but a straight position in either area would be great also. Short version of my background is that I'm a general-purpose geek and have been around computers for pretty much my whole life, so I know them pretty well and can pick up new languages and techniques in no time. A non-profit I volunteer with (TCFreenet) is looking for a part-time sysadmin (20 hrs/week, flexible schedule). You can find more information at http://tcfreenet.org/about/staff/cis-desc.html One thing to note about the job: don't be put off by the other job duties. This is predominantly a sysadmin position. The box is colo-ed so I don't believe there is a requirement to spend many hours at the office. Might be perfect for someone looking to pick up real experience to augment education/certification. BTW, the technology is FreeBSD, MySQL, Perl, embPerl, csh, and probably some C would be nice (for a small project that is coming up). Also, this is an immediate need. We lost the leading candidate for the position and are restarting the process (should you notice the job posting deadline date). If I can, I will answer any questions you may have, but I am _not_ involved in the hiring process. - Dave -- Dave Kleist dkleist@acm.org "The covers of this book are too far apart." - Ambrose Bierce
